Zune Update

November 15, 2007 at 2:49 am (Uncategorized)

So the Zune media player has come out with a new update, and I must say, some of its good, and some I’m still getting used to.

So the first thing noticed, obviously, is the layout of the whole thing. Before, you had to pick an artist from one page, then go to a list of the albums as well as tracks, and you play from there. With the update, picking the artists and albums is made more seemless by putting the whole thing on one page. Meaning, you have a list of artists on the left of the page, albums from the chosen artist listed in the middle, and songs from the album of choice on the right. I must say, its pretty nice not having to keep going back and forth between pages while listening to different artists.

One thing I find annoying is that it seems that you are unable to listen to all of the albums in a row without having them listed in a weird way, like A-Z, Z-A or by track number (So if you had multiple albums by one artist, it would play all the first tracks from the different albums first, then all of the second ones, and so on). I know its nit picky, but I liked being able to listen to the albums all in their natural order back to back, so hopefully this will be fixed in the future.

Another cool thing about the new version is the addition of podcasts, and the ability to download them to your Zune divice. I’m not sure how often I’ll use this option, but its still nice to finally have the option. The adition of colorful backgrounds is nice too. The lack of an interesting background in the first version was kind of annoying, so its nice to have some variety… although the choices are limited, its still nice to have choices. Hopefully more backgrounds will be made available in the future.

Well, thats all I got to report on the new version for now, though I’m still trying to get familar with it, so I might have some more opinions in the near future.

Dethklok on Tour

October 22, 2007 at 7:10 am (Uncategorized)

The new season of Metalocalypes is under way, and so far so good. The new episodes are just as good as the first season’s. I just got done watching one of the episodes just a few minutes ago, and it was just as brutal as any episode from the last season. For my birthday one of my friends got me the entire first season on DVD, and I watched pretty much all of it that very night. I love this show. And the fact that the band Dethklok, the main characters of the show metalocalypse, made an actual album is great. And the fact that the CD is actually good is amazing. How could I possibly get more from this band. Well, I could see them live on tour.

Thats right, a fictional cartoon band is going on a live tour as part of Adult Swim’s college tour series. The band will consist of Brendon Small (series creator) on vocals and lead guitar, and Gene Hoglan (ex-Strapping Young Lad) on drums, along with two other people filling in on bass and back up guitar. They will be serving as the opening act for And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead

Unfortunatly, they will not be coming to UAF, so I am out of luck on being able to see them live, but I am excited to hear about how the shows will be performed.

The New Zunes

October 8, 2007 at 6:23 am (Uncategorized)

This past tuesday Microsoft introduced the latest incarnations of the Zune, Microsofts equivalent to Apple’s iPod. The latest version will come out with three different models, 4-gigabiyte, 8-gigabyte, and a whopping 80-gigabytes of memory. The original came out in just a 30-gigabyte model. The prices arent’t too bad either, $149 for the 4-GB, $199 for the 8-GB, and $249 for the 80-GB and are expected to go on market starting sometime in November.

I already own a Zune, so it wont be likely that I will buy one of the new versions… the only reason that would seem plausible  to buy one of the new models would be if I ran out of memory on my current model… which currently has more then enough memory left, so that option is out for now. However there is one thing that has been added to the new Zunes that really intrigues me is the cool new feature which makes it so that your Zune can automatically update music, videos, and pictures wirlessly through a WiFi network. So who knows, when I build up my music library high enough, I may end up having to upgrade to an 80-GB Zune, but only time will tell.

Dethklok is Amazing!

September 30, 2007 at 10:37 pm (Uncategorized)

If you’ve never watched Adult Swim, you may not be aware of the show Metalocalypes, an animated show about the most brutal band ever…Dethklok. Well what started out as just an idea for a show is now evolving into an actual band… well, sort of.

Dethklok has released their first album, titled Dethalbum. But to call it a band is kinda not the right idea… you see, the band is made up entirly by Brendon Small, show creator (he also is the genious behind one of my other favorite Adult Swim shows, Home Movies). Brendon sings, plays bass, lead and rythme guitar, and he recruited former Strapping Young Lad drummer Gene Hoglan for the record.

When I heard Dethklok was going to release an actual album I was suprised and extremly excited about the idea… and now that I actually have the album, I can say that I am not disapointed. The CD expands on many songs heard on the TV show, songs like Thunderhorse Mermaider, Birthday Dethday, the Fan Song, Dethharmonic, and Go Forth and Die have all been re-recorded making them sound very tight and even more brutal than before.

The CD isn’t just expanded songs from the show, it also features brand new songs, like Lost Vikings, Hatredcopter, and Face Fisted. All songs are a lot of fun to listen to if you can understand the heavy growling vocals. Every song has lyrics that are totally ridiculous. One good example would be from the song Lost Vikings: “Many years ago we left our homes, with swords to ride into the night, fighting side by side to destroy our foes, and leave them without life.”

If you are a fan of the show you should already have this CD… I was holding out till I could find the Delux version (it includes a second CD with a couple extra songs, a music video for Hatredcoptor, and the first episode of the second season) but since I’ve been having trouble finding it, I lost patiants and decided to buy the regular version now and then buy the delux when I can find it. If you have naver seen the show, but are fan of metal and have a good sense of humor, you still need to get this CD. I give it a perfect 5/5!

Sir Elton John in child porn investigation.

September 28, 2007 at 1:48 am (Uncategorized)

So it appears that Sir Elton John is in a bit of trouble and is currently under investigation due to a piece of ‘art’ in his photo-art collection that was to go on display at an art museum in England that may have broken child pornography laws. The piece in question, entitled ‘Klara and Edda belly-dancing’, depicts two very young girls in the nude, and has been on display before at a seperate museum prior to Elton John owning it.

The whole idea of exploiting children in the name of art is pretty sickening to me. Why couldn’t the photographer, Nan Goldin, find models of-age to express her idea? I guess some people have a weird idea of what art is.

Finally, a Review or Two

September 23, 2007 at 9:20 am (Uncategorized)

Ok, so I guess I should make good on the promise that I would review some CDs, so today I have the newest releases from the bands Chiodos and Horse the Band.

First up is Chiodos‘ new album Bone Palace Ballet. For the most part the musicianship on this record is very tight, at a lot of times they remind me of Coheed and Cambria. Some songs feature piano and even a bit of a string section.

The vocals is the only thing that throws me off on this CD. Its mostly high pitched, whiney, yelling. This tends to annoy me quite a bit. There are some moments where the vocalist will yell with a deeper voice, but these moments seem few and far between.

All in all, this is a pretty tight album. If you like the whole Emo music thing, you’ll most likely like this album. I, personally, am not a fan of emo at all, but I still found this album enjoyable.

Next up, Horse the Band’s newest album A Natural Death:

Ok, so this album came out last month, I’ve just recently gotten around to buying it. And after one complete listen to it, I can tell I’ll be listening to it for a while. If you’ve never heard of this band, their genre has been defined as “Nintendocore”, this comes from the fact that they use an 8-bit synthesizer to obtain a sound similar to early Nintendo games . This is one thing that got me very interested in this band, they definetly have a sound of their own.

Now, getting to the CD, this album keeps up their “Nintendocore” reputation with their excesive use of synthesizers as well as the use of a Gameboy Music maker.

All of the songs are fast and/or furious, most with the singer yelling and growling (which seems to be much improved from past albums). Some tracks are split up with a couple very short tracks that serve as a sort of rest from the madness that this band can induce… but even these tracks can be quite insane, such as the track ‘The Beach, which is just sounds of seagulls and crashing waves in the background along with some synth and the sound of a woman crying.  Some track highlights include: The incredibly funky and catchy ‘Sex Raptor’, the quircky 8 bitness (made up word) of ‘Murder’, and the incredibly bizzare ‘Kangarooster Medows’.

I very much enjoy this album… but it may be an aqcuired taste. The chaos may be too much for the average listener to take. And the use of the synth could have been reduced. But all in all, this was a good album.

Reunions

September 19, 2007 at 6:40 am (Uncategorized)

So it seems that 2007 has become a big year for reunions. Van Halen fronted by David Lee Roth are going on tour (without their original Bassist, who has been replaced by Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang). There was talk of this happening for years, but now its actually happening.

Then there was the announcment that the almighty Led Zepplin will be getting back together for a tribute concert to music mogul Ahmet Ertegun. The show will be the first time in 27 years that all original members (beside Jon Bonham obviously, who is dead) will be playing on stage together. The show is so anticipated that the official website offering chances at tickets was shut down after only minutes of opening up offers.

And now it has been announced that all 4 original members of the legendary punk band, the Sex Pistols, are getting back together to perform a concert marking the 30th anniversary of their album “Nevermind the Bollocks”… which also happens to be their only album. The concert is going down at London’s Brixton Acadamy on November 8th.

Unfortunatly, me being an Alaskan college student, I will not be able to attend any of these shows… but I’m sure videos of all three events will be found on Youtube eventually, so at least I have that to look forward to.

First Actual Post…

September 17, 2007 at 1:25 am (Uncategorized)

…and no CD review… probably ’cause I’ve been spending too much time playing my 360… (that Skate game is addicting). But I guess I’ve got some interesting music stuff to talk about.

So the White Stripes were suppose to play a show in Anchorage in the near future… unfortunatlly Meg White (the drummer) has been having some anxiety attacks, so they canceled the whole tour.

According to MTV, Panic! at the Disco have thrown out all their work on their second album and are now starting from scratch, even though they were pretty much 3/4 of the way done recording it. This seems kinda strange to me, but hopefully its for the best.

And in local (Fairbanks) music news, Bleeding Through is gonna be playing up here at the Eagle Hall with openers Until Death and Dapsbefalen (the later of which opened for Megadeth over a week ago, and I have to say, they were awesome). The show is going down on the 5th of October, and I’m definetly going.

Well thats all I have for now, but I should have more news sometime soon.
